
CORDILLERA AUTONOMOUS REGION
(CAR)
The Cordiller Autonomous Region is one of the regions in the Philippines. It consists of Kalinga Apayao, Benguet, Mountain Province, Ifugao, and Abra. The main city of this region is Baguio City. Cordillera has abundant mineral reserves. These include metallic ores such as gold, copper, silver, zinc, and non-metallic minerals like sand, gravel and sulfur. Mineral reserves are found in all the provinces. This region is the home of numerous indigenous tribes collectively called the Igorot. The region is rich in ancient culture because the people's way of life in this place existed ways back to the ancient Filipinos before the Spain colonize the country. The people live amidst the rice terraces that is towering the Northern Luzon. The Igorot, Tinguian, Apayao, and the Kalinga Tribes reign over Luzon's Mountain Terrain.
The CAR region has many different ethnic groups which have different way of living. One of the tribes in the CAR region is the Ibaloys which are the ethnic group lived in Benguet Mountain Province. They are industrious and horticulturists. They raised all kinds of vegetables, which supply the needs of the different parts of the Philippines and Souteast Asia. Isneg are the people lived in upper half of Cordiller Province known as Kalinga Apayao.they were described as slender and graceful strucuture and they were also kind, generous, hospitable, sel-reliance, have courage and clearly artistic in their temperament. They have been known to be as head hunting society. The Tingguian was the other inhabitants of Abra which also know as Itneg. Most of them are farmers who intend rice in kaingins and rice terraces. The Ifugao are the people living in Ifugao Province located in the Central Cordillera Mountains of Northern Luzon. They are known as Igorots. Their ancestors built the famous rice terraces over 2,000 years ago without the aid of metal tools. Bontoc refers to the people of the Mountain Province. They are the only people in this area known to have laws on warfare. Their main agricultural product is rice. The Kankanayan or kankana-ey lived in the Mountain Province of Benguet which is the largest community in the Mountain Province. The Kalingas are some of the major ethno linguistic groups inhabiting Nothern Luzon and they lived in the southern half of the Province of Kalinga Apayao. They were feared for their head hunting activities.
This different ethnic group has their own different way of living, culture and traditions. In their spiritual world some of them believe in anitos and spirits of their ancestors. They also have their own kind of literature which are origin myths, fables, stories, riddles, tales, epic, legends, and songs which reflects to their cultures, traditions and history.
